He found his meadow way up high
Slashing and burning we heard them cry
He decorated this hideout to look like Hell
Rotting carcasses, he loved the smell

Tears, screams, pain, and hate
Forging his burrow he laid to wait
Plotting revenge toward God and Son
Jealousy binds, contentment none

The day came he thought he could win
He spit fire and blood all over the Rim
Burning canyons, hilltops, homes, and ranches
He burned Elk, Bear, and every tree’s branches

Through the smoke and ash from the valley below
Came a man with a grudge, some arrows and a bow
Screamed like a madman at Satan himself
“QUIT BURNING OUR FOREST AND ALL OF OUR WEALTH

Knocking an arrow, letting it fly
Satan wheeled around and caught it straight in the eye
“QUIT BURNING MY FOREST” man cried as he looked
He let loose another, that’s all it took

The demon lay still on the forest floor
The meadow opened up like a titanic door
Swallowing the devil closing with a scare
The man dropped to his knees and said a quick prayer.

He picked up his bow, starting off in a hurry
Heard a plane in the air, here comes the slurry
Animals listened from the Rim in awe
To the prayer of the man from the devil’s claw.

Devils Meadow is at the top of Canyon Creek just about a mile from highway 260. It is literally scattered with bones and charred fallen trees. It is quite eerie there and yet very beautiful. The canyons leading in and out are still fairly unburned, lush, and green. This is a great place for a half-day hike. On my last trip there I saw a bear in the canyon just upstream from the meadow and there tiny green ferns sprouting up on the floor.

This meadow is well hidden right under your nose. To get there from Payson go east on Hwy. 26, past Christopher Creek to the top of the rim. Go about three miles on the top and you will see a small gorge under the road and there is a sign that says “Canyon Creek”. Park there and hike straight down that canyon.

If you see any trash, please pick it up and carry it out. HAVE A GREAT HIKE!!!!
