On June, 25th 1990 a lightning bolt hit Dude creek and started a fire that consumed almost 30,000 acres of prime forest land, killed six fire fighters, and burned down Zane Grey's cabin.
Now when you travel through the area burned by the fire you see tens of thousands of dead Juniper trees standing gray and bare, and thousands of acres of new growth Manzanita bushes protecting the forest floor while our mountains heal them self's.
You can ride a quad into this area and see some beautiful country but please treat it with care. There are good camping places for large groups of quad riders or more remote spots for fewer people.
As you can see on the map there is a bear den on Dude Creek. I didn't put the exact coordinates on the map because mom has little ones this year, and needs her privacy. I marked a spot overlooking the area and if you get there way before light then you might see them when the sun comes up.
To get to the Dude Creek trails from Payson go north on the Houston mesa road until you get to the control road. Turn east on the control road and go about two miles until you come to forest road 195. turn north. That's the road into the Dude Creek trails.
RIDE SAFE AND BE GOOD TO OUR FOREST.
