Another great hike for kids six years old and up. Its goes down into a beautiful canyon that has huge cliffs.
Rolling green meadows where the Elk calves frolic while their mothers graze.
Great pools of water for swimming or fishing and, awesome rock formations.
You can wade in Canyon Creek for miles, upstream, or down until you get to the reservation line.
KIDS WILL LOVE THIS TREK.
To get there from Payson go east on highway 260. Go past Christopher Creek and up the rim. When you get to the top of the rim go about 3 more miles and turn left on forest road 512, also called the Young road. Go 3 miles south to forest road 33 and turn left. Go 2 to 3 miles to forest road 34 and turn right. Go about 2 miles to forest road 188 and turn right. Go 1 mile to the Valentine Ridge campground, turn in and go to the back of the campground. Park and hike right into the canyon off the back of the campground. A fire burned the area in 2002 so the short hike into the canyon is a bit drab but don't be fooled, this place is one of t he most beautiful places in the state. Please, if you see any trash down there, pack it out. Your forest will thank you.
