They say it's safe now. Some company went in a few years ago and did a lot of work to make sure there is no radiation hazard. Of course they did this after I had already spent years playing, hunting and eating game from the mine area. Most of my children were born relatively human like.
This is a great place to spend a weekend with your family however not in September, October, or November. During these months there are very serious hunters (ME) in the area. It's a great place to hunt whitetails, turkey, and elk. There are awesome places to camp and many old mining roads to ride quads on. Just remember to stay on the existing roads or the forest service will go and pile huge mounds of dirt in the road up to the mine and we won't even be able to get a quad up there. They've done it before. So load your quads for camping and find a remote canyon to call your own for the weekend. Take a small chainsaw to cut fallen trees off the roads if you need to. REMEMBER PUT YOUR CAMPFIRES DEAD OUT AND TAKE YOUR TRASH WITH YOU WHEN YOU LEAVE.
From Payson take highway 260 east past Kohl's Ranch and before Christopher Creek you will see the R-C boy scout camp, The road to the uranium mine is right across 260. Down in a little ravine you will see a forest service gate. Go through it and park there.
HAVE FUN AND BE RESPONSIBLE.
